Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried Great Northern beans, rinsed and picked over
  • 1 lb smoked ham hock or 1 lb smoked ham, cut into chunks
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the rinsed Great Northern beans in your crock pot.
  2. Add the ham hock or ham chunks to the crock pot.
  3. Scatter the chopped onion and minced garlic over the beans and ham.
  4. Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth.
  5. Stir in the dried thyme and black pepper.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the beans are tender.
  7. Remove the ham hock or ham, shred the meat, and return it to the crock pot.
  8. Season with salt to taste.
