Description

This recipe elevates the classic Sloppy Joe by serving the savory, saucy meat mixture on thick, buttery Texas toast. Enjoy a crispy-buttery crunch with every bite of this easy, kid-friendly comfort food that’s perfect for weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 8 thick slices of Texas toast bread
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional Toppings: Shredded cheddar cheese, Pickles, Sliced jalapeños, Coleslaw

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet with the ground beef. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  4. Add the tomato paste and cook for another minute, stirring to combine.
  5. Pour in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  6. Add the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld. This is your Texas Toast Sloppy Joe filling.
  7. While the meat is simmering, prepare the Texas toast. In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, minced garlic, garlic powder, and salt.
  8. Spread the butter mixture evenly on one side of each slice of Texas toast.
  9. If using Parmesan cheese, sprinkle it over the buttered side of the toast.
  10. Heat a separate skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the Texas toast, butter-side down, in the skillet. Toast until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  11. To serve your Texas Toast Sloppy Joes, spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted Texas toast.
  12. Add your favorite optional toppings like shredded cheddar cheese, pickles, jalapeños, or coleslaw.

Notes

  • For an extra garlicky flavor, you can add more minced garlic to the meat mixture.
  • Adjust the chili powder to your preferred spice level.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat the meat mixture and toast fresh bread for the best experience.
